Leading Our Future

At The Education Foundation of Alachua County, we have an active, engaged, working Board of Directors. Our board members are passionate about investing in education to ensure equal opportunity and success for the students within our Alachua County Public School District. Our board works alongside The Education Foundation’s staff to make the biggest impact possible by volunteering as mentors with the Take Stock in Children program, by helping with event planning, and by offering oversight within the various committees.

Board members serve three-year terms with the ability to serve two consecutive terms. The board meets monthly as a group to discuss the work within the committees and the organization as a whole.

Kay Abbitt

School Board of Alachua County Board Member

Kay Abitt is currently on the Alachua County School Board as a representative for District 5. Kay graduated with her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Atlantic College. She taught in Alachua County schools such as Archer Elementary and Idylwild Elementary then went on to teach at Santa Fe College. In 2014, Kay founded Gainesville’s Boulware Springs Charter School with her daughter. The school was recognized as a National ESEA Distinguished school in 2019 for gains made by students in the lowest quartile. Boulware has been recognized as having high performing charter status by the Florida Department of Education. When Kay retired in 2022, she decided to pursue her school board seat to serve Alachua County Public Schools.  She hopes to help close the achievement gap, advance innovation in curriculum, and promote unity in the district. 

Erik Anderson

Senior Team Leader – Project Development

In high school, Erik Anderson worked with a home builder and a smaller architect who both suggested he pursue commercial construction to be part of larger more exciting projects with a greater impact on the community. Erik has a wife, Kacey, and three boys Walker (2), Charlie (6) & Beckett (8). Erik graduated from the University of Florida’s Bachelor of Science in Building Construction in 2006 and Masters of Science in Building Construction in 2007. 

Erik worked for Charles Perry Partners, Inc. from 2005 to 2012 in project management with the diversified projects division serving clients UF, UF Health Shands, UAA, Santa Fe College, Department of Juvenile Justice, SBAC and other state entities. Managed several hundred projects from start to finish, but most notably ended his time at Charles Perry Partners, Inc. completing the Santa Fe College Building O Construction & Technical Programs facility as well as UF/UAA’s Indoor Tennis Facility.

Erik moved forward with his career to work with McLeod General Trades from 2012 to 2023 as a senior manager, vice president, visionary and part owner.  McLeod General Trades is a specialties trade contractor and serves all major markets in Florida as well as southeast Georgia. Erik sat in a few seats, but primarily led the leadership team with a focus on strategic planning, client relationships and expanding our market share. During his time at  McLeod General Trades, the company grew 5 times in both revenue as well as team size. A few larger and notable projects  McLeod General Trades recently completed are Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Venice, FL, FIS Corporate Headquarters in Jacksonville, FL and Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedics Hospital in Orlando, FL. Currently, Erik serves as the Senior Team Lead in Project Development at Scorpio. He leads the procurement team in providing community-centered construction solutions with passion and purpose. 

Bea Awoniyi

Assistant Vice President – Student Affairs
Santa Fe College

Dr. Bea Awoniyi serves as the College Ombudsman and the Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Student Affairs at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida.  She oversees the Disability Services Office and the Access programs within the Division of Student Affairs.  Prior to Santa Fe College, Bea served as the Assistant Dean of Students and the disability services director where she developed programs, wrote standards for services, and participated in state-wide and interagency collaborations for effective transition, inclusion and engagement of students with disabilities in Colorado, Iowa, and Florida. 

Originally from Nigeria, Bea received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale (SIU-C) and her PhD. from Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, Colorado.  Bea is engaged with the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) at the national level as well as the state affiliate level.  She served on the Board and also as President and is one of the founding members and the past President of the Florida AHEAD affiliate (FL-AHEAD).  She was also engaged with the National Association of Student Personnel
Administration (NASPA) and served as Chair of Region III Disability Concerns. Bea a Director on the Johnson Scholarship Foundation Board and a member of the North Central Florida’s Center
for Independent Living (NCFCIL).

Mary Benedict

Community Volunteer 
eSchool/Council PTA

Mary Benedict moved to Gainesville in 2006, and with her husband George Sarosi raised two children, a daughter who graduated from Eastside High School and a son in 11th grade at Alachua e-School. Although trained as a cancer biologist, Mary now enjoys a second career as a volunteer, advocating for children in the Alachua County community.  Mary has been active on PTA Boards for over 20 years, first in Dallas, and then as President of Chiles Elementary PTA, Eastside High School PTSA, and now Alachua County Council of PTAs, (ACCPTA). 

While at Chiles, Mary started a Weekend Food Backpack Program for food insecure students. It merged with programs at Terwilliger & Norton to become Food4Kids Backpack Program of North Florida. As the Enrollment Coordinator for Food4Kids, Mary worked closely with school counselors across the county to identify and feed food insecure students, and over 10 years helped the organization grow to feed over 1,000 students in 30 schools, annually.

As the parent of an autistic son, Mary is also a strong advocate for families of students with mental & physical disabilities, and uses her community connections to provide these families access to much-needed resources through ACCPTA workshops and the annual Disability Resource Expo.
 
Mary is currently President of the Alachua County Council of PTAs, a Florida PTA Board member, on the Meridian Behavioral Healthcare Board of Associates, and a Take Stock Mentor to a junior at Eastside High School.  Mary has previously been a long time board member and Treasurer of the UF Medical Guild.

LeAnn Campbell

LeAnn holds a bachelor’s degree in Education Sciences from the University of Florida College of Education and is currently a rising second-year law student at UF’s College of Law. Alongside her studies, LeAnn is pursuing a graduate certificate in Early Childhood Education Policy at UF’s College of Education and is a fellow for the UF Law Center on Children & Families.

LeAnn is a proud graduate of Leadership Gainesville and is active in the Gainesville community with the PTA, the Alachua County Human Rights Board, and the Santa Fe College Paralegal and Office Administration Advisory Committee. LeAnn was a Take Stock mentor for four years and, before law school, worked as a paralegal in the education law sector for twelve years. 

Patty Carroll

Sr. Lead, Culture & Communications 
Infotech

Patty Carroll serves as the Sr. Lead for Culture and Communications for Infotech, bringing to the role more than 12 years of experience in communications and public relations. In her role, Carroll is responsible for creating and communicating a comprehensive corporate communications program that emphasizes and drives Infotech’s culture. Carroll also manages Infotech’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, which include oversight of philanthropic giving, DEIB, and environmental sustainability efforts. Infotech became a Senior Scholarship Sponsor in 2023.  

Prior to her role, Carroll worked in the nonprofit sector for nearly 10 years managing government relations, development, foster and adoptive parent recruitment, and media relations for a local child welfare agency. Throughout her career, Carroll has developed a passion for advocating for the needs of children and families in the Alachua County area and beyond by developing strong partnerships and networks within the nonprofit sector.  Carroll has lived in Gainesville since 2012 with her husband. Together, they have two children, Joshua (7) and Dillon (9 months). The family enjoys taking advantage of all Gainesville has to offer!

Larry ”Steve” Cecil

Steve Cecil is a Community Volunteer.  He was our Take Stock in Children Mentor of the Year in 2019.  Steve’s enthusiasm goes beyond just mentoring his students. Steve has been a member of the Foundation’s Board since 2016 and served on the executive committee as board secretary until the 2023-2024 school year when he took a year off as required by our bylaws. He is always there to step up to the plate when our Foundation needs anything. Steve continues to serve on our board’s Finance Committee and our Take Stock Leadership Council. He supports all our fundraisers and invites his friends to attend with him.


Adria Deren

Tax Partner

Adria Deren is a tax partner at Carr, Riggs & Ingram, LLC, a regional CPA firm, with almost 20 years of experience.  She works with small to medium-sized businesses for all of their bookkeeping and tax needs, including full-service bookkeeping, sales tax, payroll tax, tax compliance, tax consulting and planning.  Adria’s acute attention to detail, analytical nature, and extensive knowledge of the tax code truly set her apart from others.  She has 2 children in the Alachua County school district and is excited for the opportunity to contribute to the Education Foundation of Alachua County.

Lauren Elliott

Director – Communications and Community Engagement
HCA Florida North Florida Hospital

Fourth-generation cattlewoman Lauren Elliott (Lettelier) hails from Citra, Florida, where she was raised on a 160-acre Brangus cattle farm. Upon graduating from the University of Florida with her degree in News Broadcasting-Telecommunications in 2013, she worked at WCJB TV 20 News in Gainesville as the Ocala Bureau reporter and Weekend Anchor for the ABC affiliate. Two years later, she became the Public Information Officer for the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in Ocala, Florida, and served Marion County’s citizens for 4 years. In 2019, she joined HCA Florida North Florida Hospital as the Communications and Community Engagement Director, and recently celebrated her 5th year of service to the hospital and the Gainesville community. In her spare time, Lauren enjoys working on her family’s farm, volunteering in the hospital’s pet therapy program with her adorable corgi Tucker, and spending time with her friends, family, and her husband Matthew.

Mitchell Hay, CFP, ChFC

Koss Olinger

Mitchell Hay grew up in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. He attended the University of Alabama where he studied finance and economics. From there he pursued a career in financial advising with stops at Northwestern Mutual, Fidelity Investments, and now Koss Olinger. He lives in  Gainesville with his wife, Jordan. They met in high school and attended Alabama together. She is a nurse practitioner and spent time in the emergency department at Shands, OneStop Urgent Care in Alachua, and is now with GlowBar in Haile Village. They spend a lot of their time together and enjoy the outdoors and attending Florida Gator sporting events. Much of that could soon look different as the Hay family is anticipating the arrival of a baby boy in June. Outside of work, Mitchell has spent time mentoring students through Take Stock in Children and is currently on the board of the North Central Florida YMCA.

Romona Jackson

Financial Literacy Coach

A native of Brooklyn, New York and proud graduate of Florida A&M University located in Tallahassee, Florida. She graduated from this historical institution with a degree majoring in Broadcast Journalism. Romona has a background in radio where she worked as Program Director for WAMF-90.5, hosted her own Gospel radio morning show and served as Mistress of Ceremony for a host of events.  Romona gained experience and served her community as a Regional Banking District Manager for Wells Fargo, overseeing the operation of the Gainesville District which is comprised of 8 branches and 104 team members.  

She is also the owner of Total Life Productions, LLC, where she earns credit as an author by having published three books: Redefining Me: A 90 Day Devotional and Know Your Worth: You Are Not Your Past. Including the recent release of Crazy Faith, Unexplainable Peace: Lessons My Mother Taught Me.  As a Playwright, Romona has produced and debuted two stage-plays- “Train up a Child” and “Me, Myself and God”, and has directed three plays for the Star Center Theater: Aretha, The Bodyguard and Simply Simone where she has the distinct privilege of serving as the President of the Star Center Executive Board. 

Expanding her range of entrepreneurship, Romona launched her financial coaching business, FinanSense, LLC, July 2021.  She successfully earned her designation as a Master Financial Coach from Ramsey Solutions and from the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE).  Because of her life experiences, Romona is passionate about helping to empower individuals and families holistically, striving to help build strong families, thereby resulting in strong communities, spiritually, physically, and financially. 

Aside from being a Praise and Worship leader, Romona is a certified Zumba instructor, an avid runner and soon to be a certified Personal Trainer. Collecting medals after a run is her favorite pastime. She is a member of Faith Church, a well-informed graduate of Leadership Gainesville 45, a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, for 30 years and an excited member of the Gainesville (FL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated.

Kathleen Joseph

Licensed Mental Health Counselor 
Kathleen Joseph & Associates, LLC

Kathleen Joseph is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (FL MH #15959) who has been in private practice since 2015. Kathleen specializes in helping clients heal trauma and integrate change into their personal narrative. Kathleen is a Somatic Therapy trained practitioner, and she utilizes various somatic based modalities to aid clients who have endured trauma to function with greater resilience and ease.

Kathleen is passionate about addressing issues affecting traditionally marginalized populations (e.g. historically oppressed racial/ethnic groups, members of the LGBTQ community, etc.) in the counseling context, and finds deep meaning from this work. Kathleen was trained at the University of Florida where she received her M.Ed/Ed.S in Mental Health Counseling with an additional certification from the University of Florida Center for Spirituality and Health.

Prior to being a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Kathleen has worked for various social service/community-based agencies, including the Partnership for Strong Families, Meridian Behavioral Health Care, and the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office. Kathleen is the creator of the BrainPower Program at Girls Place Inc., which is a mental health program designed to serve the young women of Girls Place and their families.

Darry Lloyd

Darry Lloyd has been in law enforcement as a sworn officer for 29 years. He’s currently the Chief Investigator for the 8th Circuit State Attorney’s Office which covers 6 North Central Florida Counties. Darry is a graduate of the 269th Session of the FBI National Academy. Currently serves as the Moderator for Gainesville Police Black on Black Crime Taskforce, Vice Chair of the Missing Endangered Person Clearinghouse Advisory Board for the State of Florida, and Board member of the Greater Gainesville Chamber of Commerce. Darry is Currently the Chapter President of the Gainesville Alumni Chapters of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Darry was recognized with the NAACP President’s Award in 2023 and the Good Trouble Award for the Florida Delegation of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Nelson Logan

Mr. Nelson Logan is a retired professor and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs from the University of Iowa; He also served as the Director of Multicultural Affairs – College of Dentistry at the University of Florida (retired). He was the Group Chairman of Vistage Florida and worked as an Executive Coach in North Central Florida CEOs by way of the Mastermind Group of Business Owners and CEOs. The majority of Mr. Logan’s professional life has been in education – elementary through professional/graduate programs, with a particular interest in helping students from disadvantaged and compromised backgrounds.

He served and shared his expertise on many boards in Iowa City including Rotary (international fundraising) and the University of Iowa Credit Union Board. He mentored with the Take Stock In Children program and enjoyed reading with children at two local elementary schools. He worked to help raise funds for the UF College of Health and Health Professions Department of Epidemiology. Mr. Nelson holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Wichita State University, A Master of Science degree in Mathematics, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Utah.

Leslie Pendleton, Ph. D

Executive Director
University Initiatives – University of Florida Advancement

Dr. Leslie Pendleton is the Founding Director of the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars Program at the University of Florida (UF). She is a national leader in creating sustainable efforts to support the college and life success of students who are the first in their families to pursue a college degree. Dr. Pendleton now serves as the Executive Director of the University Initiatives team at UF Advancement. In this role, she is the lead fundraiser for the Machen Scholars program along with other university priorities such as Parent and Family Philanthropy, Veterans’ Success, as well as need and merit-based scholarships. During her tenure at UF, beginning in 2006, Leslie has also supervised the Disability Resource Center as well as New Student and Family Programs to coordinate first-year experiences programs and summer orientation for new students and families. Leslie currently serves on the Advocacy Group for the Center for First-Generation Student Success, an initiative of NASPA and the Suder Foundation.

Originally from Indiana, Leslie earned her undergraduate degree in Political Science from the College of Wooster, her master’s degree in Student Personnel and Higher Education at Miami University, and her
PhD from the University of Florida in Higher Education Administration. Leslie was a collegiate swimmer and still swims today with a master’s team in Gainesville. Leslie and her husband have two daughters in
the K-12 public school system in Alachua County.

Anne Polo

Director of Communications and Marketing
Greater Gainesville Chamber of Commerce

Anne Polo is the Director of Communications and Marketing at the Greater Gainesville Chamber of Commerce where she enjoys driving the organization’s mission to prove that Gainesville really is the best place to be. Prior to joining the Chamber, Anne was a project administrator and marketer with a local commercial construction company for 18 years and developed a passion for fostering an altruistic company culture. Outside of her workday she is an avid paddleboarder, traveler, photographer, wife, mother of three, devoted goldendoodle enthusiast, and an active member of the City of Newberry’s Planning and Zoning Board and the Historical Architecture Review Board.

Jacquelyn Randall

Mayor 
City of Hawthorne

By profession, Ms. Jacquelyn Randall is a Registered Respiratory Therapist with 14 years of experience. By purpose, Ms. Randall is a 3rd generation commissioner in the city of Hawthorne. Her maternal grandfather and mother both served on council. She began her service in June of 2019 with the last two years as Mayor. Ms. Randall is a part of various groups throughout the state some of which include, Florida Black Caucus – LEO, Young Elected Municipal Officials (YEMO) a founding member, Waldo-Campville-Hawthorne-Rochelle community remembrance sub-committee and now a proud board member for The Education Foundation. 


Ms. Randall’s political priorities are centered around education and healthcare. She believes these are the cornerstones for a healthy and thriving community. Serving Hawthorne has been a blessing to her, it continues to allow her to meet incredible people and foster partnerships while also finding solutions that will make her community a better place. She is looking forward to the good work ahead, helping students of Alachua County succeed and lead our future generations.

Charles Riggs Jr, MD, FACP

Retired Oncologist
UF Health Shands

A product of the Palm Beach County public school system, Dr. Riggs graduated as valedictorian from Forest Hill High School. Having been consumed by a passion for studying medicine, he moved north to attend The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and achieved undergraduate and medical degrees over the next 7 seven years. He was fortunate to be introduced to a physician-scientist during his freshman year of college, whose counsel and advice strongly influenced Dr. Riggs’s courses of study until and beyond the completion of his clinical training, and a strong base of research inquiry that enabled his subsequent career. Faculty positions at University of Maryland, University of Iowa, and, finally, University of Florida gave him opportunities to serve people with malignant diseases and develop research bases for advancing medical knowledge.

After 55 years of working in hospitals (high school to present), Dr. Riggs elected to retire from University of Florida in early 2023. He maintains a small clinical practice at the Gainesville VA Hospital, primarily teaching and guiding residents and fellow trainees as they hone their clinical and scientific knowledge of hematology and oncology (cancer medicine). Dr. Riggs’s goal is to remain an active presence in training young minds, in the same fashion in which he was privileged to be guided by motivated mentors, and to continue lifelong learning.

Gwendolyn Saffo

Gwendolyn Delores Saffo was born on March 8, 1959, in Monticello, Florida. Ms. Saffo received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice and Public Administration in May 1981 (summa cum laude) from Shaw University and her Master of Arts from the University of Florida in 1984 in Political Science with a concentration in Public Administration. Ms. Saffo possesses a broad base of knowledge that spans over thirty-five years in equal opportunity, equity, and social justice. She has worked in both Human Resources and Equal Opportunity. She began as an intern with the City of Gainesville Office of Equal Opportunity and progressed to the Affirmative Action Manager and Chief Investigator. She was also responsible for the office’s outreach programs, which included the Dismantling Racism Initiative, where she led and facilitated workshops and town hall meetings.

Ms. Saffo also served as the Interim Equal Opportunity Director twice during her tenure with the organization. Ms. Saffo has always been highly visible and active in the community. She served as the Chapter President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Gainesville Alumnae Chapter from 2001-2005 and 2007-2011, and in many other capacities on the sorority’s state and regional level. She is the co-founder of the Collaboratively Woke Initiative, a partnership between the Gainesville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the Delta Sigma Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. This partnership has led to many successful collaborations, including Get Out the Vote, Leadership Academy, “Peace in Action-A Gun Violence Prevention Resource Fair,” and Town Hall meetings on Community Race Relations. Ms. Saffo is the former Vice President and current take-stock mentor with the Education Foundation of  Alachua County. She is the current Vice President of the Board of Directors for the League of Women Voters of Alachua County (LWVAC), the Chair of LWVAC’s Gun Violence Prevention and Safety committee, and a member of the LWVAC’s Voter Services committee.

Ms. Saffo is an active member of the Visionaires, Inc., the National Council of Negro Women, the National Alumni Association of Shaw University (past Financial Secretary), the Florida Sunshine Alumni Chapter of Shaw University (President), the American Association for Access, Equity & Diversity, and the National Forum for Black Public Administrators, North Central Florida Chapter First Vice-President. Ms. Saffo has been awarded the following accolades in recent years: the 2023 Mercerdese Clark Trailblazer Award for Social Action (Delta Days at the Florida State Capitol conference) and the Violette N. Anderson Award (presented by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. – Delta Sigma Zeta Chapter). Ms. Saffo’s motto is, “If you put God first, you don’t have to worry about what follows,” and she takes pride in being a servant leader. The theme of her life is “Living MY Life Like It’s Golden!”

Mary Salvamoser

Mary Salvamoser is the Executive Assistant to the CEO and Board of Directors at Oak Hammock at the University of Florida. In 2004, she started serving residents of this continuing care retirement community as Branch Sales Manager for M&S then Ameris Banks. In 2019, retiring after serving 30 years in the financial services industry and 8 years fundraising for Children’s Miracle Network and the Florida Museum of Natural History, she took on her current role. 

Residing in Gainesville for over 30 years, Mary’s involvement in the community includes a senior scholarship with The Education Foundation, museum memberships, and coordinating or volunteering on group projects benefiting various local non-profit organizations. She received her Bachelor of Science in Communications from Clarion University of Pennsylvania, recently renamed PennWest.

Scott Thomas

Chief Financial Officer
PathPoint Energy, LLC

Scott joined the team at PathPoint Energy LLC in 2022 as Chief Financial Officer. Founded in 2021, PathPoint Energy is an active participant in the US wholesale natural gas markets through its trading, scheduling, and asset optimization operations. He and his family moved to Gainesville in 2010 after he joined Infinite Energy as its CFO. In his time there, he was responsible for the company’s finance, treasury, accounting, risk, regulatory, and facilities functions in addition to serving as a key member of the executive leadership team. Previously, Scott was an investment banker with Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Banc of America Securities, and UBS Investment Bank. His banking experience includes advising executives and boards of major corporations in the in the utilities, power generation, and pipeline space on critical strategic decisions, mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructurings, and financings in the debt, equity, and bank capital markets. 
 
A native of North Carolina and a lifelong Tar Heel, Scott holds an MBA from Kenan-Flagler Business School at The University of North Carolina and a BS in Mathematics with Honors and Distinction from The United States Naval Academy. Prior to beginning his investment banking career, he served as a nuclear-trained submarine officer in the United States Navy. His wife Dorothy is an active volunteer in the Gainesville community through her efforts with Southwest Advocacy Group (SWAG) and The CHILD Center. They have two children and a rescue dog of unknown origins named Bailey.

John Tull

Senior Manager of Business Development 
Gator Sports Properties 

John Tull of Gator Sports Properties has traveled all over the nation pursuing his business career in sports. Right before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, his ventures landed him in the heart of Gainesville where he now serves the Florida Gators as a marketing executive, working with businesses across the state for advertising opportunities. Growing up in South Bend, Indiana, Mr. Tull majored in history at DePauw University, located in the historic town of Greencastle, Indiana, because his dad was a history professor and he grew up in an academic household. When he interned at an athletic department during college, that’s when the door of opportunities opened up for a career in sports management. 


After completing the internship, Mr. Tull earned a Master’s in Sports Management at Indiana University Bloomington. For 20 years, he traveled the country operating minor-league baseball teams and hockey teams. In 2008, he started his college sports career working for Learfield IMG College as a promoter for Penn State. As a promoter, he was able to expand his experience in sports marketing. He developed and executed award-winning entertainment promotions, game presentations, advertising campaigns, and promotional community relations strategies to increase brand awareness, corporate partnership revenue, and ticket sales.
